If you are like me, you don’t like filing of emails too much. I just love the Google’s way of ‘Archiving’ the mails and keeping my Inbox Zero and clean. But without a proper Outlook Search tool, this method would be highly impractical. I have been using Microsoft Desktop Search all these while but it took my laptop’s XP to a crawling speed. My outlook data weighs multiple GB’s. So I was in the market for a better Outlook Search tool. Here is what I found:-

1) I checked out a new Outlook Search Tool – Lookeen - a fresh software which is being frequently updated.   I had a chance to speak up with the developers (from Germany) over FaceBook!. Lookeen on my Outlook seems to do the Job just fine.

2) Google Desktop Search – is just a waste of time. The search results were pointless. More or less it always gave me some generic results. I must admit that before the Windows Desktop Search days, I was a GDS fan.

3) Copernic Desktop Search – Could not handle the size of my Outlook Data I guess. It just vanished in to thin air most of the time. I cannot trust something which crashes this often. CDS was much better in the earlier versions.

4) LookOut – Yeah.. The world has come to a full circle once again. Circa 2004 thingie. LookOut was lightning fast and my favorite. Microsoft took over this tiny tool to make the MSN Desktop Search. Since then, most of us forgot about LookOut. But in these days of bloated Desktop/Outlook search tools, to see something like LookOut – which just does its job – is a rarity. Fortunately MajorGeeks still have a copy of LookOut 1.3 for download. I installed, indexed and was ready to go in just half an hour. Fresh Air!

LookOut works well with my Outlook 2003 install and there are ways to make it even work with Outlook 2007.

Microsoft’s distinguished engineer Eric Traut talked about upcoming Windows 7 operating system at University of Illinois. He admits:-

A lot of people think of Windows as this really large, bloated operating system and that’s maybe a fair characterization, I have to admit. It is large. It contains a lot of stuff in it, but at its core, the kernel and the components that make up the very core of the operating system actually are pretty streamlined.”

Glad to see Microsoft stepping up for a diet :)

The Asus P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP@n motherboard has a special boot sequence (ExpressGate,SplashTop) which loads an embedded Linux Operating system with Firefox and Skype pre-configured. The system will be up and running in quick 5 seconds. Quite handy when you quickly want to browse the Internet or grant a guest access for someone to your PC.

Hopefully, this technology would become cheaper soon. I would definitely want this feature on my next Laptop.

Digg-Stack. This one is really addictive – especially if you are on Digg frequently. This has to be the best  graphical display of the most happening stories on the Internet. Individual diggs for the favorite stories falls down like Tetris cubes to pile up further. The higher the pile, the greater the story.

Looks almost possible with some ‘resellers’ offering iPhone at exorbitant prices. Check this 8GB iPhone model  available through Rediff. Someone at iPhone-Nirvana is claiming to have 10 unlocked iPhones ready to be shipped to India. Buying an iPhone through eBay or any other online store may not be good as you must pay the Indian custom duty in excess of 38%.

I would suggest getting it through someone returning from USA. If you can wait, next year iPhone should be available through HCL/Wipro distribution channels.

If you can’t really wait to touch, this person at FaceBook has a great deal! :D
