iPhone Working with Airtel GSM Network

Here is a video of the iPhone I captured with my Canon A610 Digital Camera. Just to show you how it works well with the GSM networks in India. Also see the demo of the iPhone Safari browser over the home WiFi network.

Plz suggest me regarding wireless internet; which one is best reliance data card , tata indicom data card or airtl mobile office ; am having O2 XDA stealth, which is not having EDGE.

Vinod Ponmanadiyil July 1, 2008 at 8:15 pm

@gaurang : You need an “EDGE Fix” – It is there in the Installer of your iPhone.

@noopy: Outgoing call issue is uncommon with iPhone. I have never come across this. I would think it is a Network operator issue, rather than a problem with the iPhone. Still you could do a restore of the iPhone to see if the problem persist.

@Satti: If you are looking for Wireless Internet on the Go on a mobile, Everything is equally bad!. I would suggest getting a BSNL EVDO Modem if you could. If you are in Bangalore you can reach Rajanna of BSNL at 9964752376 or 08028450420 (BSNL) for availing a EVDO connection. More details here too http://bsnlevdoclub.com/

how do use home wifi . in the video are you referring to wifi hot spots or the wireless wifi network that BSNL is offering . i need more insight of the home wifi which you have used to connect to the net in your video.

Vinod Ponmanadiyil July 2, 2008 at 1:57 pm

@arunmohancr: In the Video, I am using a Home WiFi connection. To setup a home Wifi network, you need a Broadband connection + A wireless router. Once your router is configured to work with the broadband, you can connect as many devices to your home network!

Hi Vinod,

I need help about restoring the iphone.
I am using my iphone for last 3 month, but now it hsa started to hang very often.
My iphone version is 1.1.4(4A102). I have got it unlocked through Ziphone.
I want to restore the phone to its original form and again jailbreak and unlock it through ziphone.
Will i loose my SMS, Contacts etc while doing that.
And is it safe to this.
I need your help in this regard. A descriptive response about the whole thing will be just great.

Thanks in advance.

@Abhishek: I would suggest the following:-

1. Fully Restore your iPhone with the 1.1.4 image directly from Apple.

2. Use iLiberty to Jailbreak it. Install the BSD, Installer, BootNeutR etc.

3. Then use BootNeutR to Unlock.

You can have your iPhone SMS backed up (by SSHing to your iPhone) by just saving the file /private/var/root/Library/SMS/sms.db to your computer. You can later replace the file to the same place on your iphone.

For Contacts and Appointments, just use the Sync Option available on iTunes to backup to Outlook/similar.

Thanks Vinod in advance for your support..

The problem I am facing is with my 1.1.4 iphone. For the last month i was able to use it on the Airtel network with no probs. Tho randomly recently whenever i make a call… it cuts and says “Call Failed” the reception crashes to zero and then comes back to full signal.. I have done some simple experiments to see what the problem might be . first switching in another airtel sim–same result… using a Vodafone sim– no problems.. soo apparently my only solution is to start using Vodafone =(. I have restored and ziphoned / pwnedage several times to no avail.. Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated/ In addition i have called Airtel and they are suggesting to me nothing is wrong on their side.

@vivek: before proceeding further, can you please check if the same problem occurs if you insert the same SIM in another phone?

Hi Vinod,

I read through all the messages and I must say you are of great help to we iphone users.
I’m having a problem with my iphone and I need your help. I’m in the middle east and using iphone for the past 3-4 months. I bought an unlocked phone and has ver. 1.1.4. I’m facing a network problem for the past 3 weeks or so…the phone is not picking the network and people who try to call me get my phone as switched off. But the moment I place it on charging, the network is fine. Could it a problem with some recent downloads? Or could it be an issue with the iphone instrument? I’m using this SIM for the past 3 years. Please help.

Thanks :)

@abhishek : You will get the BootNeutr installed by Pwnage or iLiberty Automatically. Similarly BSD, SSH, Installer etc.. can also be installed through the iLiberty Software. You can find iLiberty over here:- http://iliberty.zjlotto.com/Setup/iLibertySetup_1.3.0.113.exe

@satyanarayana: I would suggest you to wait till Vodafone or Airtel officially launches iPhone 3G in India. May be a couple of months more. A 4GB iPhone is not in production. You will get either a 8GB or a 16GB phone versions. The pricing is not announced yet.

@vivek: If it is a hardware problem, i would suggest you NOT to open the iphone and fiddle!. You should rather sell it off stating the defect to the prospective buyer.

@Anu: There is a FIX available in the installer for the EDGE issues. Please install it and see if the problem goes away. If the problem still persist, I would suggest you to do a complete restore. Then jailbreak using Pwnage or iLiberty. Further unlock using BootNeutr. If you are using a Metal Case to protect the iPhone, that may also interfere with the network reception. Keep your iPhone naked!

@Saleem: The touch screen becoming non-sensitive is a problem with some unlucky iPhones. You may try the following fix:- http://limitededitioniphone.com/iphone-touchscreen-fix-increase-sensitivity/

@Rakesh: As I stated earlier For EDGE to work properly, you need to subscribe to the FULL GPRS subscription from your operator. If the EDGE connectivity issues still persist, install the EDGE fix from the Installer and see if it goes away.

@Prasad: Please see the response to @satyanarayana

Dear Readers, I would urge you to upgrade to iPhone 2.0 firmware using the new Pwnage tool from the DevTeam.

The future native iPhone applications will not work with firmware 1.1.4 or lower.

Vinod, thanks alot for making iphone users life easy.
I have iphone with version 1.1.4. I guess firmware 2.0 is released. Please let me know if and how to upgrade my iphone. Is it safe? Will I lose existing data on my iphone. I hear reports that jailbroken sets brick out on installation.

Reply

Vinod Ponmanadiyil July 30, 2008 at 5:43 pm

@Chetan: Thanks!. You can safely upgrade to firmware 2.0 using the Pwnage tool available here:-
Pwnage for Windows : http://winpwn.com/
Pwnage for Mac : http://xs1.iphwn.org/video_assets/PwnageTool_2.0.1.zip

I would suggest you to sync all your personal data(Contacts, Calendar) using iTunes to Outlook/iCal before upgrading.

I have successfully upgraded to iPhone 2.0 firmware from the last week without any issues. But be warned that, NONE of your 1.1.4 applications(Games, Themes etc) will currently work on the new firmware. You will have to wait till the developers port them to new firmware. Btw, You can still enjoy the applications available officially through the Apple iTunes AppStore.

Hi Vinod,

I need some help for upgrading my unlocked 1.4 iphone.
I had initially unlocked my iPhone through Ziphone, after 3 months of use i was having some problems. I again unlocked the same phone without doing any restore by iLiberty. I am currenly able to use all the applications that were installed prior to iLiberty.
Now in this particular case what will be the best way to unlock my iPhone.
Should i first restore to 1.1.4 via itunes and then go for upgrade or is it safe to use WinPwn.

I know you have successfully upgraded with Winpwn, did you face any problem in that and are there any trick for a successful upgrade.
I have read some blogs, i am confussed if it is neccessary to go into restore mode and the procedure for the same.

I know its a lot of question, but your help will be gr8.

Thanks.

Hi Abhishek – Answering your questions :)

You can be on ANY firmware version before upgrading to 2.0. You don’t have to restore before doing an upgrade. As you noted, I did upgrade – but using Pwnage tool on Mac. WinPwn should equally work good for you.

Just follow the instructions given here http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1572

Let me know how it went.

“Step Twelve
Select the custom firmware file we just built from the Pwnage folder on your desktop and click the Open button.”
I opened the custom firmware file. This automatically opens iTunes. However I am not getting the message “iTunes is now Pwned”. Does it take a lot of time. Basically not able to execute step 12.

The SMS forward application is yet to be ported to iPhone 2.o. For Live Video Streaming, Recording and Downloading install the Qik or FlixWagon applications available on Cydia. They are completely free and easy to use!

Hi Vinod,

I tried upgrading to 2.0 with winpwn. I followed all the instruction as per the guide and was able to get the message that itunes has been pawned.
I am also able to get my iPhone in DFU mode. But when I connect my iPhone again to restore it, iTunes can’t find it. It does not show my iPhone.
When I open iTunes after getting into DFU mode it says can’t connect to the iTunes server. I am not connected to Internet. Is it required to be connected to the net to get the restore option in itunes.
Do we have a better and faster solution than winpwn to unlock and jailbreak

Thx in advance. I can’t wait to upgrade to 2.0

@Abhishek: Try QuickPwn. Just upgrade to the latest firmware using iTunes. After that just follow the instructions on the screen.
http://xs1.iphwn.org/releases/QuickPwn.zip

Can you please elaborate on this. What is the procedure to upgrade firmware through iTunes. Do I need to be in DFU or recovery mode? Will quickpwn work for unlocking and jailbreak both.
If you dont mind can you leave your ph. No.at abhishek.bvp@gmail.com
Does quickpwn also require to create a custom firmware.
I have downloaded quickpwn and have that installed on my pc.

One more suggestion, can you provide a link at the top of this page to the bottom of the page as its painful to scroll the whole page in iPhone.
It will be gr8 help to browse on iPhone

Thx and keep the good work going.

@Abhishek: Here is a graphical tutorial on QuickPwn:-
http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1727

Let me know how it goes. It is very simple :)

Reply

Vinod Ponmanadiyil August 25, 2008 at 1:59 pm

@Vivek: Your current settings are perfectly allright. Nothing more to do manually!. If your jailbreak+unlock process had gone without issues, EDGE too should work without issues.

If you are still not able to get EDGE working, Upgrade your firmware to 2.0.x. You can do it easily using the QuickPwn software. Please see the Link above for a graphical tutorial.

Btw, it is worth upgrading to 2.0 firmware – because of the Push Email, App Store applications etc..

Hi Vinod,

The tutorial you provided only talks about Jailbreaking the phone.
Nowhere it talks about unlocking the Phone.
How will i get to unlock my iPhone after that.

At the last of tutorial it says, install and run BootNeuter from Cydia.
How do I install and run BootNeuter as i won’t be connected to any network at that point of time to download and install BootNeuter.

I am really puzzled now. Please help.

Reply

Vinod Ponmanadiyil August 26, 2008 at 12:11 am

@ABHISHEK NATHANI: No. At the moment you cannot unlock the iPhone 3G using software. So you cannot use it on BSNL.

@Abhishek Anand: Your phone’s baseband will not be upgraded as part of the upgrade process – unlike the 3G phones. So your existing unlock will remain. Even otherwise, the QuickPwn is intelligent enough to automatically invoke the BootNeutr if unlock is required. You don’t have to do anything manually or download anything in Cydia etc. The QuickPwn will do everything for you!

Adding more to my previous post: I originally had 1.1.3 firmware and upgraded to 1.1.4. The Ziphone I have is the 2.5v. So do I need to restore to 1.1.3 to be able to get the Apple guys to service my phone? Also has anybody else had issues which needed a jailbroken iPhone to be serviced by Apple? I am not sure whether they would service a phone which is still locked. Do appreciate your response.
