iPhone Working with Airtel GSM Network

Here is a video of the iPhone I captured with my Canon A610 Digital Camera. Just to show you how it works well with the GSM networks in India. Also see the demo of the iPhone Safari browser over the home WiFi network.

@Brijesh:
Thanks!. First, you need to check your firmware version. If its version 1.1.1 , I would suggest you to wait a bit more. The current unlocking solutions for iPhone 1.1.1 requires you to downgrade to 1.0.2 for radio baseband. Keep yourself updated on the offerings from iPhoneSIMFree and iPhoneElite team.

Hi Vinod,
Grreat site you’ve got here. Keep up the good work.
Anyways after much googling and a bit tweaking I managed to get Airtel Live working on my Iphone, I see that many people who want to get Airtel Live working on their phone are going for the Airtel Mobile Office plan which is like rs 499 per month in my state whereas Airtel Live is free to activate though you have to pay some data transfer charges on your browsing usage.
I have posted the instructions at http://frustimation.blogspot.com/, do have a look and comment back.

nochinta

hello guys, im using my iPhone on Airtel as well as BSNL Cellone from the last two months. And i dont have any problem regarding network signal, outgoing/incoming calls and sms. But i found that GPRS in not supported in iPhone. So i’m using wifi and connected to my BSNL dataone broadband. Its working perfect, i even made this comment from it

Vinod January 11, 2008 at 1:25 pm

@Abhinav,Beleuh:

I have used the EDGE/GPRS on both Airtel and Vodafone networks in Bangalore successfully. It works. The Accesspoint name is ‘www’. You need a subscription to ‘Full GPRS’ not something like ‘Airtel Live’ etc.
At home, you can have better connectivity using WiFi as Beleuh said!

some of my friends told that the warranty will be void if we purchase the iphone usa and use it in india….
will it be costly if v purchase an unlocked phones?

Reply

Vinod Ponmanadiyil January 22, 2008 at 1:06 pm

@Vikram: Yes, the warranty will be void if you unlock the iPhone to be used in India GSM networks. Though most of the Apple products, including iPhone carries a Global warranty, since iPhone is not yet officially launched in India, iPhone in India will not carry any warranty.
We are not yet sure what would be the retail price of an Official iPhone in India – guess it would be around 24K.

Hi Friends,

I hv got Iphone ver 1.1.2 but I am facing Network problem with Airtel….Network suddenly goes down for 2 seconds & come back, however its fine on any other mobile handset…Moreover, if someone calls up the nhe can listen to my caller tune but i dont receive the call…Pls help me in resolving this issue

Reply

Vinod Ponmanadiyil January 27, 2008 at 6:47 pm

@Nitin: I am on Airtel too. But never had any issues with calls. 99.99% of the time iPhone is ready to make/receive the calls. Maybe one of the 3rd party program that you installed through Installer is causing the issue. I would suggest you to do a clean restore.

Hi,

I unlocked the iphone using the ZIPHONE software,But after unloking I am facing some problems.The Iphone is not ringing /vibrating when there is an incoming call.The caller can listen the Calling tune (TRING TRING),but there is no response from iphone.I can see a loading LOGO appering in iphone when incoming call is going on,and that time i cant oparate any application of iphone.Seems the iphone gets hanged that time.After the call is over the iphone again comes back to its normal position.I m AIRTEL subscriber.

Please suggest some solution to this.

Thanks

Vinod Ponmanadiyil February 20, 2008 at 2:25 pm

@Avipat: Try these:-

1) Do a clean restore of 1.1.3
2) Jailbreak and unlock using ZiPhone
3) Restart your iPhone
4) Install the BSD subsystem, OpenSSH and Community Sources in this order.
5) Restart your iPhone
6) Install AppSupport 1.1.3
This should resolve all the dialer related issues for you. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Vinod,

Thanks for the help.But when I am trying to install the BSD subsystem , the pop up window displays HOST NOT FOUND.Do I have to have Wi-Fi ? IF the SIM is GPRS active , then I can install the packages?

Thanks

Reply

Vinod Ponmanadiyil February 21, 2008 at 4:31 pm

The BSD sub system is more than 6MB in size. So installing over EDGE/GPRS may not be feasible. Get them through a WiFi connection.

I think, You don’t have the proper firmware on your phone now. Can you just ‘RESTORE’ your iPhone using the latest 1.1.4 firmware from Apple?. There is no Restore button on the iPhone.
If you are not able to connect to download the firmware, just download the 1.1.4 firmware from http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4313.20080226.Sw39i/iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw
Then just press the [shift] key on your PC and click on the ‘Restore’ button on the iTunes, Point to this downloaded file and wait for it to finish. After the phone is successfully restored, Keep your iTunes open, at the same time just run ZiPhonen again to Jailbreak+Unlock.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi vinod,

I have Iphone with version 1.0.2. It works perfectly fine including the internet, youtube etc. My Question is if i upgrade my iPhone to 1.1.4 and then unlock it using ZiPhone as mentioned in your earlier post then would all the features work the same way it is working now?? I mean would gprs using vodafone, youtube etc would still work after the upgradation?? Do you think i should upgrade it myself?

I would really appreciate if you could send me the detailed upgradtion process from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 (latest)

Thanks
Shahid

Hi,

Is there anyway to change the homepage in safari browser in iphone from “apple.com” to something else

Thanks,
Vij

Reply

Vinod Ponmanadiyil March 20, 2008 at 2:01 pm

@Vij: There is no concept of a homepage in Mobile Safari. It simply opens the last pages you’ve been browsing – the next time too.

@Others:
The unlocking can be completely and successfully done nowadays with the ZiPhone tool. You can get it from http://www.ziphone.org

Amit,
You can’t use Airtel Live on iPhone – iPhone uses EDGE and Airtel Live is not supported. If you have a GPRS connection then you can get into Settings<General<Network<EDGE and on the APN field enter airtelgprs.com leaving the username and password blank. Your internet should work after that.

Hi Vinod,

‘M on 1.1.2, have a turbo sim, and was able to get the Airtel Signal on my iphone. But when i click on any of the option ..viz, for sms, phone, etc,,it goes into the next window and immediately comes back to the home. Thus i am not able to make any calls or send/view sms.
Also, when an incoming call comes, the phone does not ring/vibrate (i have checked the settings for this as well)
Please could you suggest something
