iPhone Working with Airtel GSM Network

Here is a video of the iPhone I captured with my Canon A610 Digital Camera. Just to show you how it works well with the GSM networks in India. Also see the demo of the iPhone Safari browser over the home WiFi network.

its really cool to see ur iphone working on airtel….just got my handset 2 days back….i have opened the handset but am not able to activate the carrier network for irtel….can you help me.

    regards
    Brijesh

  4. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

    @Brijesh:
Thanks!. First, you need to check your firmware version. If its version 1.1.1 , I would suggest you to wait a bit more. The current unlocking solutions for iPhone 1.1.1 requires you to downgrade to 1.0.2 for radio baseband. Keep yourself updated on the offerings from iPhoneSIMFree and iPhoneElite team.

    Hi Vinod,
Grreat site you’ve got here. Keep up the good work.
Anyways after much googling and a bit tweaking I managed to get Airtel Live working on my Iphone, I see that many people who want to get Airtel Live working on their phone are going for the Airtel Mobile Office plan which is like rs 499 per month in my state whereas Airtel Live is free to activate though you have to pay some data transfer charges on your browsing usage.
I have posted the instructions at http://frustimation.blogspot.com/, do have a look and comment back.

    Regards,

    dear vinod,
i recently bought iphone. it works good on airtel but not able to connect on airtel live. can you tell me how to do settings to go on net?

  21. beleuh Says:

hello guys, im using my iPhone on Airtel as well as BSNL Cellone from the last two months. And i dont have any problem regarding network signal, outgoing/incoming calls and sms. But i found that GPRS in not supported in iPhone. So i’m using wifi and connected to my BSNL dataone broadband. Its working perfect, i even made this comment from it

  22. Vinod Says:

    @Abhinav,Beleuh:

I have used the EDGE/GPRS on both Airtel and Vodafone networks in Bangalore successfully. It works. The Accesspoint name is ‘www’. You need a subscription to ‘Full GPRS’ not something like ‘Airtel Live’ etc.
At home, you can have better connectivity using WiFi as Beleuh said!

  23. vikram Says:

some of my friends told that the warranty will be void if we purchase the iphone usa and use it in india….
will it be costly if v purchase an unlocked phones?

  24. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Vikram: Yes, the warranty will be void if you unlock the iPhone to be used in India GSM networks. Though most of the Apple products, including iPhone carries a Global warranty, since iPhone is not yet officially launched in India, iPhone in India will not carry any warranty.
We are not yet sure what would be the retail price of an Official iPhone in India - guess it would be around 24K.

  25. Nitin Says:

    Hi Friends,

I hv got Iphone ver 1.1.2 but I am facing Network problem with Airtel….Network suddenly goes down for 2 seconds & come back, however its fine on any other mobile handset…Moreover, if someone calls up the nhe can listen to my caller tune but i dont receive the call…Pls help me in resolving this issue

  26. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Nitin: I am on Airtel too. But never had any issues with calls. 99.99% of the time iPhone is ready to make/receive the calls. Maybe one of the 3rd party program that you installed through Installer is causing the issue. I would suggest you to do a clean restore.

  27. Avipat Says:

    Hi,

I unlocked the iphone using the ZIPHONE software,But after unloking I am facing some problems. The Iphone is not ringing /vibrating when there is an incoming call. The caller can listen the Calling tune (TRING TRING),but there is no response from iphone.I can see a loading LOGO appering in iphone when incoming call is going on,and that time i cant oparate any application of iphone.Seems the iphone gets hanged that time. After the call is over the iphone again comes back to its normal position.I m AIRTEL subscriber.

Please suggest some solution to this.

    Thanks

  28. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

    @Avipat: Try these:-

    1) Do a clean restore of 1.1.3
    2) Jailbreak and unlock using ZiPhone
    3) Restart your iPhone
    4) Install the BSD subsystem, OpenSSH and Community Sources in this order.
    5) Restart your iPhone
    6) Install AppSupport 1.1.3
This should resolve all the dialer related issues for you. Let me know how it goes.

  29. Avipat Says:

    Hi Vinod,

Thanks for the help. But when I am trying to install the BSD subsystem , the pop up window displays HOST NOT FOUND.Do I have to have Wi-Fi ? IF the SIM is GPRS active , then I can install the packages?

    Thanks

  30. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

The BSD sub system is more than 6MB in size. So installing over EDGE/GPRS may not be feasible. Get them through a WiFi connection.

  31. PM Says:

Hi Vinod, I got my new iPhone yesterday thru a friend in the US. I want to get it unlocked but have doubts if everything will work or not….can you tell me what really works and what doesn’t so i am not disappointed. Also I stay in Bangalore…where/how should I get it unlocked? Thanks,PM

  32. D@iphone Says:

    Avipat,
Did you have your problem resolved

if yes, what is that you did

  33. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@PM: The Unlock is something my kid can do today!
Just download the latest version of Ziphone software from http://www.ziphone.org and just Click! :)

  34. PM Says:

Hi Vinod, I unlocked my phone thru Ziphone but can’t make calls or SMS. Did a reset through phone settings but no luck. Have done a DFU as suggested on Ziphone but can’t find the restore button on iTunes to complete the process. Need help pls. Thanks,PM
    (Am not technically minded:))

  35. PM Says:

The iTunes states “The IPod Software Update Server could not be contacted” but my internet is working. Thanks

  36. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

I think, You don’t have the proper firmware on your phone now. Can you just ‘RESTORE’ your iPhone using the latest 1.1.4 firmware from Apple?. There is no Restore button on the iPhone.
If you are not able to connect to download the firmware, just download the 1.1.4 firmware from http://appldnld.apple.com.edge.....store.ipsw
Then just press the [shift] key on your PC and click on the ‘Restore’ button on the iTunes, Point to this downloaded file and wait for it to finish. After the phone is successfully restored, Keep your iTunes open, at the same time just run ZiPhonen again to Jailbreak+Unlock.
Let me know how it goes.

  37. Santosh M Says:

    Hi vinod,

I have Iphone with version 1.0.2. It works perfectly fine including the internet, youtube etc. My Question is if i upgrade my iPhone to 1.1.4 and then unlock it using ZiPhone as mentioned in your earlier post then would all the features work the same way it is working now?? I mean would gprs using vodafone, youtube etc would still work after the upgradation?? Do you think i should upgrade it myself?

I would really appreciate if you could send me the detailed upgradtion process from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 (latest)

    Thanks
    Shahid

    Hi,

Is there anyway to change the homepage in safari browser in iphone from “apple.com” to something else

    Thanks,
    Vij

  47. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Vij: There is no concept of a homepage in Mobile Safari. It simply opens the last pages you’ve been browsing - the next time too.

    @Others:
The unlocking can be completely and successfully done nowadays with the ZiPhone tool. You can get it from http://www.ziphone.org

I am not able to use the internet due to settings i have activated airtel live and net on phone services please help me how i can use and porivde me settings my mail id is amit.hunt@yahoo.com or call me at 9871832041 or sms me.thanx in advance.

  49. PM Says:

    Amit,
You can’t use Airtel Live on iPhone - iPhone uses EDGE and Airtel Live is not supported. If you have a GPRS connection then you can get into Settings<General<Network<EDGE and on the APN field enter airtelgprs.com leaving the username and password blank. Your internet should work after that.

    Hi Vinod,
I just got my iphone today itself,
its just great, i just cant resisit using it.
My iphone is working fine, but i need some help about bluetooth.
Im not able to use them. Though my device shows Bluetooth On and Now Discoverable, Searching, it is not able to search any bluetooth devices around.

Also i would like to know about using GPRS and EDGE with Airtel.
How to activate them and the seeting required for the same.

I must say your reviews and blogs gave me the confidence to book my phone.

  57. Abhishek Anand Says:

    Hi Vinod,

Where are you using your phone? i mean which circle.
I would like to know more bout how to get the best out of iPhone.
If you dont mind, can i call you or so.
I have got some doubts bout th phone, like can i connect my unlocked iPhone to Apple and get the latest webapps for myself.
How can i get voice and video recording in my system.

Can the bluetooth be used to pair with any other device except bluetooth eadset.?

I have an icon for Installer, is this provided by Apple or is it due to its being unlocke.
I have got this from my relative who has unlocked it through ZiPhone.

    Looking forward to your answers.

    iPhone simply rocks man!!!

  58. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

    Hello Abhishek!
Congratulations on your iPhone. I am sure you will love it to bits!
As far bluetooth goes, unfortunately iPhone does not support many bluetooth profiles. The BT can only be used for connecting to handsfree now. After June this may change as more development will happen on iPhone.
For connecting iPhone to the Internet in India using EDGE/GPRS on Vodafone/Airtel/IDEA etc.. you will need to subscribe for the FULL internet package with them - not the regular WAP ones.
The APN (Mobile Office, Hutch Access) can be set by going to Settings->General->Network option on your iphone.
The [Installer] program is NOT provided default by Apple, but by the cool guys at NullRiver. Once you have got the Internet working on your iPhone, you can use this Application to Install MANY wonderful things like Voice Recorder, Video Recorder(not-so-good right now), Games, Themes etc.
Let me know how it goes.

  59. Abhishek Anand Says:

    Thanks VInod,

Does the iPhone work fine with Airtel in Maharastra, i.e. do they have EDGE over here.

Which all setting do i need to modify for using this,i.e. the data for APN etc.

Do you have any specific suggestion about what to do and what not to do with a unlocked iPhone..??

Thanks for keeping the good work going.

  60. Shirshaka Says:

    Hi Vinod

I saw your update about the BT on iphone. Unfortunately I am having a new Motorola S9 which can be supported by the iphone, but the problem faced by me is that when the BT is switched on, it continuosly searches for the devices but doesn’t finds any. When I tried the same to be connected with ma laptop, it was still in searching mode but the Laptop found it and then they were paired. But the same can’t be done through a headset. Can you plz help me on this.

    Hi Vinod,

I have the iphone 1.1.4 unlocked. But i have no clue how to get internet access on it. That is Edge and all. I want it cause I have the installer and it needs internet access to install all the nice packages in it like summerboards games etc etc.
Now I am in Delhi and on Airtel Prepaid and I call 121 customer care and ask them to activate GPRS and they say iPhone is not supported so they cant do anything. Tell me what should i tell them and how can I get it to work and will they give me some settings and where do i enter those settings. Thnx!!

  67. Abhishek Anand Says:

    Hi Friends,
here is help for all Airtel user to activate GPRS on their iPhone.
    I just got that activated.
Ask the customer care to activate GPRS/Mobile Office for you. It wil cost you flat Rs.349.

    Go to setting
    Go to General
    Go to Network
    Go to Edge
    Set APN as airtelgprs.com
    leave others field blank.
You are done to use EDGE on it.
To activate gprs you can also sms
    AGPRS to 121
    n then MO to 121.
You can also ask customer care to give you the manual setting which is the same i have explained if you dont get my point.

Thanks Vinod for bringing all iPhone users in India together and making the best out of our phone.
Feel free to ask if you have any doubt.

@sundeep, others: I have heard many issues with the Ziphone unlocked iPhones being not able to make outgoing calls etc. As a suitable fix, I would suggest you to Jailbreak, Unlock and Restore using the Latest Pwnage tool available at http://www.iphone-dev.org/

  73. Saleem Says:

    Hi,
I am able to browse in my iphone using Airtel. Now i need to connect the iphone to my laptop. It recognizes the iphone and i am able to synch the photos, but when i tried to access internet via iphone(acts as modem) i am not able to, when i contacted the airtel custmet care, they said i have to install the driver. I didnt get any CD from iphone. Do anybody have idea about this. Please share your exp.

    Thank you
    Saleem

  74. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Saleem: You cannot use the iPhone as a USB/Bluetooth Dialup modem at present. Instead you can create a Ad-Hoc WiFi network between your WiFi enabled Laptop and iPhone. Once you set this up, you can share the iPhone’s Internet connectivity to the Laptop. You should be able to browse on your laptop then. This process is known as iPhone Tethering.
    Follow these procedures:-

  75. Anshul Says:

    Hi Vinod

    Thanks for all great work

Please let me know how can i add my old sim contacts in iphone

  76. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Anshul: Yes, you can copy the old contacts from the SIM to the iPhone contact database. You can find programs like SIMPort in the Installer Application - which does this easily.

  77. Anshul Says:

Thanks Vinod for information but can you please explain in detail how to use it. I have downloaded Simport.pxl.zip but has no clue what to do next

  78. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Anshul: You need WiFi/EDGE/GPRS connectivity on your iPhone to download them directly. You may startup the Installer.App on your iPhone and SIMPort can be downloaded and installed through that application.
If you are still confused, please refer to this instructional video:-
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7AXz5TQ7gc

  79. Anshul Says:

Thanks Vinod but now i realized i don’t have Installer.App on my iphone. I just got it unlocked in New Delhi a week back. Please let me know how can i install it now

  80. prithvi Says:

i have unlocked my iphone thro ziphone tool but i have notdone this step NOTE*: After completion its probably a good idea to install BSD Subsystem first then OpenSSH from Installer.app . How should i do it (is it necessary and what is the purpose)
    2. How do i activate GPRS and EDGE in my iphone i have a AIRTEL (chennai) postpaid connection

  81. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Anshul: It is out of ordinary that you don’t have the Installer.app on your unlocked iPhone. I would suggest you to do the unlock+jailbreak+activate once more by following this tutorial:-
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=849

    @prithvi: Answering your questions here:-
    1) It is not mandatory to have BSD and OpenSSH if you are not planning to install any third party applications ( like games, other utilities) on your iPhone. Most of the third party applications requires BSD on your phone. OpenSSH is required if you are planning to do some file transfer between your PC and the iPhone using the SSH over the WiFi. This too is not mandatory.

    2) You need to subscribe to the Full GPRS package with Airtel. Ask for Airtel MobileOffice. Once activated from their end, You can go to [settings]->[general]->[network]->[edge]->type in the APN as ‘airtelgprs.com’(Without quotes) and leave the username/password blank.
Then you can open the Safari browser and browse the internet further.

  82. prithvi Says:

    Thanks Vinod
I did the do it all ie unlock+jailbreak+activate the first time itself and its working fine. and i have told airtel people to activate Mobile office and i am waiting for the same. Where can i get applications for the iphone like games etc. and how to enable custom ringtones like songs, increase the volume etc on the phone

  83. sagar Says:

  84. arun Says:

  85. Vij Says:

    Hi Vinod,

I have been using iphone for 3 months now and have got almost everything working on it. The only problem I face is that many a times I am not able to browse the net with wi-fi, although the wi-fi connection is shown as enabled and connected in the iphone. It works some times and some times don’t. All the time, I am able to connect to net using my laptop - that means its not a problem with the wi-fi router. What could be the problem? Please let me know if you have a clue. Thanx

@Chetan: Did you subscribe for the FULL GPRS/EDGE connectivity with your service provider?. The WAP kind of connectivity will not work with iPhone. If you are on Airtel, you need to subscribe to ‘MobileOffice’ and if you are on Vodafone get ‘HutchAccess’.

  91. Chetan Says:

    Thanks for your comments.
Yesterday, I was trying to download games on to iphone. For some reason Safari browser was not opening. Do you know what I need to do to fix this?
Also can you suggest some sites where I can download games for free.

    hi,
I’m now able to connect to Internet using airtel ‘mobile office’ services.
However I need help in creating contact group on iPhone which iPhone doesn’t facilitate.

  96. chetan Says:

again I was tring to download some wallpapers from net.error ’safari not download file’ appeared. This happens quite often while downloading files. Very frustrating.need your help

  97. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Faruk: I would suggest waiting till the iPhone 3G launch in India. Moreover it looks like the Activation process of the iPhone 3G has to be done at the store itself. That leaves you with only one option to buy from USA. The totally network-independent unlocked iPhone 3G which will cost around >$400 instead of the $199. Again the latest firmware though jailbroken and unlocked, would require some good field tests once the actual devices are out.So WAITING is the keyword for now!

@chetan: By default iPhone’s Safari browser does not support downloading of files. Though using a the ‘Safari Download Plugin’ which is available through the Installer, you could download the files on to your device.

  98. chetan Says:

can someone help me with creating contact groups. I tried creating contacts groups in microsoft outlook2003 and sync with iPhone buy this does not work.

  99. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@Chetan: Unfortunately iPhone firmwares upto 1.1.4 does not have the ability to create Contact Groups/Contacts Lists. This is featured in the new iPhone 3G’s firmware. So you will have to wait :)

    Hi Vinod,
Too good place for replies to queries.
    Please help me…
I have a iphone 8GB with firmware version 1.1.4, i did unlock it and able to use it fine for more than a month. But now the outgoing from my phone is not working… all other things are working perfectly.
    Help me solving this issue.

  102. satti Says:

Plz suggest me regarding wireless internet; which one is best reliance data card , tata indicom data card or airtl mobile office ; am having O2 XDA stealth, which is not having EDGE.

  103. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@gaurang : You need an “EDGE Fix” - It is there in the Installer of your iPhone.

@noopy: Outgoing call issue is uncommon with iPhone. I have never come across this. I would think it is a Network operator issue, rather than a problem with the iPhone. Still you could do a restore of the iPhone to see if the problem persist.

@Satti: If you are looking for Wireless Internet on the Go on a mobile, Everything is equally bad!. I would suggest getting a BSNL EVDO Modem if you could. If you are in Bangalore you can reach Rajanna of BSNL at 9964752376 or 08028450420 (BSNL) for availing a EVDO connection. More details here too http://bsnlevdoclub.com/

  104. arunmohancr Says:

how do use home wifi . in the video are you referring to wifi hot spots or the wireless wifi network that BSNL is offering . i need more insight of the home wifi which you have used to connect to the net in your video.

  105. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

@arunmohancr: In the Video, I am using a Home WiFi connection. To setup a home Wifi network, you need a Broadband connection + A wireless router. Once your router is configured to work with the broadband, you can connect as many devices to your home network!
