India to get own satellite navigation system – IRNSS

September 28, 2007 · 4 comments

On the lines of the USA controlled GPS, Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) is developing a region specific satellite navigation system. The project is estimated to cost Rs.1600 Crores. This system is named as Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).

The ISRO Satellite data can be used free for civilian purposes like – Agriculture, Vehicular navigation, Civil Aviation and fisheries. The project consists of 4 geo-stationary satellites and 3 in Geo synchronous orbits. The whole system will be completely operational by 2011-2012.

For the first time, I’m happy that I’m paying taxes!

Only thing that puzzles me is, why doesn’t India think globally. Look at what they’re planning to achieve, an IRNSS and not IG(Global)NSS. (why am I so not-thrilled? well, I don’t trust them Yankies etc.! And I believe that if you can redo the rockets and super computers on your own, then do all those things that you can… And when you do them, do them grand. Why do we always have to wait for a decline-of-request on Tech transfer to stand-up?)

Well, at least now I’m also not very sullen at paying taxes religeously.

To Life!

I think having our own GPS network is a good start. we can later fill with the network with GPS satellites to cover the global network.
