Want to buy or touch(!) an iPhone in India ?
Looks almost possible with some ‘resellers’ offering iPhone at exorbitant prices. Check this 8GB iPhone model available through Rediff. Someone at iPhone-Nirvana is claiming to have 10 unlocked iPhones ready to be shipped to India. Buying an iPhone through eBay or any other online store may not be good as you must pay the Indian custom duty in excess of 38%.
I would suggest getting it through someone returning from USA. If you can wait, next year iPhone should be available through HCL/Wipro distribution channels.
If you can’t really wait to touch, this person at FaceBook has a great deal! :D

hai i am from bangalore-Koramangala i got my iphone today that is on 02.11.07,i checked with Airtel and Vadaphone its working fine no doubts on that..when i recieved it i got the slip in that its written (Do Not update iTunes to version 7.4 or above, Do Not restore or update this phone firmware, as it could lock your phone.) Can you tell me which iTune i have to use..

First please check the firmware version of your iPhone. From your description it looks like you have the 1.0.2 version. If you have not acqainted with the unlocking procedures I would suggest you to keep the current version. iTunes will not auto update your phone. It would just suggest you to update. You can even turn off the auto update reminder on the itunes. For added peace of mind you can try downloading the older version of iTunes 7.3 from filehippo.com.
Once you are made up your mind to upgrade later, you can do that. But the process is slightly involved. I have made a post on how I upgraded mine.

Hi Vishal,
1) you can update to iTunes 7.4 but do not update you iphone firmware, iTunes will ask for it when you will attach your iphone to itunes.
2) to enable wifi go to general settings, touch wifi, slide it to on, enter your passcode
check if safari is working. if not again go to same place, touch arrow on your router name, touch dhcp, go down, touch the button called renew lease wait for new ip to be assigned.
these steps work for my iphone, any help feel free to contact.

I hv bought an iPhone from usa. i hv unlocked it and used there with T-Mobile sim card. but when i try to use the same with AirTel, i am getting “iPhone can be used only with approved sim card” .. in usa, i tried with various cards and unlocked using the jai break.
can you help me? due to this, im not able to use it for the past 20 days. THanks.

In order not to mess up with the iPhone, you need to TURN-OFF the automatic updates in iTunes. You can do so by going to Edit->Preferences->General->[Uncheck] the ‘Check for updates automatically’ option in iTunes menu.

@Hitesh: Unfortunately the Bluetooth stack in iPhone is kind of ‘useless’!. As of today they can only be paired with bluetooth headsets. If you need to copy the SIM contacts to phone memory, Just add the http://install.ifon.no source to your Installer.app and download the ‘SIMPORT’ app.

1. How to tranfer apps to iphone from PC? i use itunes 7.3 but i do not see anyways to tranfer apps.
2. I bought the unlocked iphone but i have observed that the right speaker has v v feeble voice output hence affecting the performance of the o/p of the speakers in totaility.
I have an app to enhance the o/p of the speaker but the app is only for 1.1.1 onwards …is there any app to increase speaker volume on 1.0.2 FW 4.X

You can certainly Jailbreak an out of the box (new) 1.1.2 iphone, but as of now there is no way to Unlock it using a software solution. Presently You need to get hold of SuperSIM or any SIM cloning solution to Unlock the 1.1.2 iPhone. If you wait for the release of 1.1.3, there are some good chances of DevTeam releasing a true software unlock. In the meantime, if you are truly in a hacking mood, try the excellent guide available at http://www.dvdtoiphone.com/iph.....guide.html
. You may also have to make a visit to a nearest electronics store to buy some cheap SIM cloning/Flashing devices. Let me know how it goes.

As of now iPhone/iTunes does not support 3rd party applications. So there is no way to install them through iTunes. If you are using this phone in India, it means that your phone is already Jailbreaked and unlocked. Please search for the ‘Installer’ Application in your iphone, you can find many useful (unofficial) 3rd party applications using that application. The ‘Installer’ application allows many ‘Sources’ to be added to get more and more applications. Still, if you prefer to manually transfer applications, use iBrickr. Let me know how it goes.
There is only One Speaker for iPhone!. The other one is the Mic. So you get only Mono output from the iPhone speakers. I would suggest you upgrade to 1.1.1, as the sound output is better with that and as you said rightly, there is an application too to make it sound better. On 1.0.2 i guess you are out of luck with the speaker sound. Still, you van try tinkering with the ‘celestial framework’ settings.

If you can bring an iPhone with 1.1.1 it is very easy to unlock. If you bring 1.1.2 , you can use the SIM Cloning solutions or TurboSIM to unlock and use further in India.

Yes, you can easily jailbreak and unlock your iPhone using Software methods if the firmware version is 1.1.1 or lesser. There are plenty of guides available like this one:- http://iphone.ranova.org/index.shtml which I am sure will guide you step-by-step. Let me know how it goes.

It is now possible to Unlock OTB 1.1.2 / 1.1.3 iPhones. Geohat has done the ‘impossible’!
Here is a simple tutorial I found:-
Download these:
gunlock and the secpack from http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/ or the blog
the 4.02.13 fls from http://george.zjlotto.com/index.php/baseband/
2. Downgrade your phone to 1.0.2.
irrespective of wher u are 1.1.1/1.1.2 otb not otb
press and hold power and home button untill u see the screen go blank , leave the power button as soon as the screen turns black, (set up the speaker volume on ur pc to high) as soon as the screen goes black u’l hear a sound, now after abt 10 secs holding down the home button u’ll hear another sound , now in itunes it will say phone in recovery mode and all, in itunes, hold the shift key (alt key in mac) and downgrade sequentially to 1.1.1 if you were in 1.1.2 or from 1.1.1 to 1.02 (some will say go directly to 1.02 I prefer this) once ur on 1.02
jailbreak and activate it , use ibrickr or watever u like.
install installer.app through ibrickr or watever, update it, install
community sources,bsd subsystems,open ssh, mobile terminal, etc etc
now use win scp/ibrickr and upload all files to usr/bin
files are gunlock/secpack/fls file for 1.1.2/gunlock.c
use putty or mobile terminal to execute the following commands
launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
gunlock secpack ICE04.02.13_G.fls”
launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
5. Enjoy your 1.1.2 OTB unlocked iPhone

A Simpler Method:-
1. Open Instller on your jailbroken 1.1.2 OTB and install OpenSSH and Term-vt100 (under System)
2. Connect via WiFi to your iPhone using WinSCP
3. Copy all the files (gunlock, ICE04.02.13_G.fls and secpac) to /usr/bin
4. Set permissions of gunlock to 755 in WinSCP
5. Put iPhone in Airplane mode (IMPORTANT!)
6. Execute the following commands in Terminal:
launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
gunlock secpack ICE04.02.13_G.fls
launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
7. Restart iPhone and throw your ***sim out of the window
