Google Talk! and Skype on Symbian Series 60 v3

Advertisement

It’s out finally ! just go to Fring and register for your OTA download link. I have been using Fring on my N72 for quite some time and must say that I am addicted!. But with the support for my E61, it just continue to rock! Be warned that the current downloadable may not be optimized for E series. But it just works great for me. Even on my Edge connectivity. Thank you to the brilliant guys behind Fring. sometime I just wonder - despite being the ONLY mVOIP solution offering native support for both skype and Google Talk! - Fring is not hyped by bloggers all around - just as they do for semi-VOIP offerings like Nimbuzz, Talkster and Jajah.

    One small wrinkle with the Fring client is that it appears to keep the handset in a state of permanent ‘awakeness’. As a result I have seen the battery life of my Nokia N80IE (which was never super to start with) reduced to around 2 hours when running the Fring client. In my opinion this makes the client unuseable.

  3. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

    Yes Sebastian, Fring may not be as ‘power concious’ as a native SIP client on Series 60v3 phones like N80iE. The obvious reason being it cannot achieve the O/S level integration as it is an application. Yet, Fring claims around 300% better power savings compared to its previous version.
    Apart from these the N80iE client is still in beta, so we need to wait much before writing it off. IMHO, Fring is the First and only multi-client TRUE VOIP solution available for Symbian phones.

    Hi all,

    With Nimbuzz you can also add your Google Talk, MSN and AIM contacts for chat. Also we have just added the possibility to add your Skype buddies on the mobile platform.
    We are currently working on the mobile Symbian VoIP solution and expect this to be ready Q4 this year. Until then we have another solution using a local call-out. This solution is good for both Symbian and J2ME clients. VoIP doesn’t exist at the moment for J2ME clients (only Symbian) and you should also have a flat fee UMTS contract with your operator to get a decent phone line.
    Besides this we are working on a lot of really cool features which we will release very soon!

    I am using nokia E61I can you please give me links to download Google talk on my handheld. Earlier I was using blackberry 7100 I miss BB messenger a lot. Is there anything similiar I can use on nokia e61i. Also my network supplier is airtel newdelhi.

  11. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

    @Rahul:
    Unfortunately google does not have a native google talk client for Symbian. But all your Google Talk messaging needs can be fullfilled by using Fring. Just go to Fring.com and send an SMS to the their designated number. As a reply you will get a link (OTA) to the Fring application.

  12. rahul dutt Says:

    Thanks a lot for qucik reply. Well I heard about Fring through your website, but slightly confused whether servce is free of cost or not. Example if I install fring and make calls to USA through it or use google talk, hopefully Airtel won’t charge me.

  13. Vinod Ponmanadiyil Says:

    @Rahul:
    Fring is completely Free of cost. But to use it you should be having Full-GPRS connection on your phone. Airtel or any other service provider would charge for only the GPRS connection. Fring can be used to make FREE calls to USA and to anyone who is using an IM like Yahoo or MSN.
    If you directly want to make FREE calls to landlines and Mobile phones in USA or many other countries, I would suggest using TruPhone. It works excellent with E61 / E61i. Fortunately even TruPhone is Free. You can get TruPHone from http://www.truphone.com

    hi . m using nokia e61i. i want to know how can i download google talk on my device.

  15. Vivek Says:

    Punit, please read what Vinod said before. He’s quite clear (and correct) when he says that Google Talk does not yet have a native client for Symbian OS (which runs the E 61i). In short, you cannot download Google Talk on your phone. But TruPhone is a very good alternative.
